Brandon Presbyterian Church
Historical Sketch
1851-2001
1851
Church formally organized by Rev. Duncan Campbell.
1870
Present sanctuary building dedicated.
1950
Sunday School annex was built by men of the church. In November, the
Sunday School held its first meeting in the new, yet unfinished, 40x40
ft. building, with approximately 15 children and 5 adults attending.
(Today, this is the nursery/preschool area.)
1954-55
Hammond organ purchased. Services every Sunday (instead of twice a
month) began.
1959
J. Julius Scott, Jr., a senior at Columbia Seminary, filled the pulpit
every other Sunday during the school year and moved into the manse
after his graduation and ordination in May 1959, at which time he
became installed as the full-time pastor (the first full-time resident
pastor since 1919).
1959
Repossession of old manse for additional Sunday School rooms. Space in
Education Annex converted for pastors study. Bulletin distribution
began. Repairs on steeple done, and new carpet installed in sanctuary.
1968-69
Sanctuary remodeled. Central heating and air conditioning added, along
with new pews, carpet, altar rail, and inside shutters on the windows.
Gravel parking lot paved.
1975-76
Two-story Fellowship Hall and Sunday School rooms dedicated. Library
established. (Space had previously been a kitchen and restrooms.)
1982
Reuter Pipe organ donated.
1985
Stone wall on south side of church grounds removed and replaced with
brick wall.
1992-93
Two Sunday morning worship services inaugurated. Communion set
donated.
1996-97
New furnishings for youth Sunday School room, 30 new folding tables,
150 padded folding chairs donated. Offices, preschool and nursery
renovated and refurbished. Bats in steeple relocated at cost of
$12,000.
1998
"Future Home of Brandon Presbyterian Church" sign placed on
eight acres on Highway 80 East. What a blessing to obtain this
property, paid in full!
2000
Steeple structurally repaired, reinforced. Mission statement adopted:
Confidently, On the Move, Making Disciples For Christ. Sessional
committees formed. New pew Bibles and hymnbooks donated for sanctuary.
2001
Steeple damaged by lightning. Replaced with fiberglass steeple. Bell
removed and mounted prominently in front of church (in anticipation of
future relocation).
The Brandon Presbyterian Church
Brandon Presbyterian Church was formally organized in 1851 by Rev.
Duncan A. Campbell, D.D. Regular meetings were held in homes, Lodge
rooms, and the old Brandon Female Academy until the third Lords Day in
July 1870, when the present church building was dedicated.
Since those early days, the
church has acquired both a rich spiritual and natural heritage. The
church in Gods providence has experienced various setbacks and unique
circumstances such as the Civil War, bouts of yellow fever, food
poisoning, etc., yet at the same time, it has found God to be faithful
in all and found its own faith strengthened through the trials. Over
time, many things have changed such as the people within the church, the
culture surrounding the church, issues encountered by the church, etc.,
but some things have remained the same such as the goodness of God the
Father, the righteousness of Christ, the life transforming and
sustaining power of the Spirit, the conviction of Scripture to be the
divinely inspired, inerrant and all-sufficient Word of God, the belief
in Jesus Christ as the only way of salvation, the centrality of the
cross, the mission of the church, the dependence upon the doctrines of
grace, the high view of worship, and the dedication to making disciples
through the education, fellowship and service of the saints. Though not
inclusive of all the factors, these have contributed significantly to
the church standing firm for 150 years and both position and prepare the
church for what lies ahead.
The church currently
possesses a sharp sense of vision for the future. Standing upon an
absolute commitment to keeping Christ central, to keeping the Holy
Scripture as our foundation and guide, and to following the Great
Commission as our charge, we come together in community and strive
together in faith to adorn the gospel ourselves, to communicate the
gospel to others, and to carry the torch of the gospel to future
generations. With our roots firmly established in the historic Apostolic
Faith and building upon the legacy of the faithful who have served under
the banner of the Reformed Faith, we now consider ourselves the next
generation of witnesses responsible for forging the way into the future
along with fellow believers, by upholding Biblical Christianity thru the
proclamation, attestation and representation of Gods Word. We recognize
that apart from Christ, we can do nothing, but in Christ we can and will
accomplish all that he has prepared in advance for us to do. Every
member is called and committed to serve and together we will move
forward in his grace to the glory of God!
