First, I will assume that the question refers to adults since children are not
suppose to be able to see "R" rated movies.
One must be careful not to become legalistic when confronting questions like this.
Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah when he said, "These people
honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship
me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men." The
ratings that movies have are not only assigned by men, but in some if
not most cases they are done by unbelievers. Therefore, to have a rule
against watching "R" rated movies and say that it is O.K. to
watch P.G. movies would be legalistic even if the ratings were done by
Christians. The fact that the ratings are influenced greatly by non-Christians makes relying on this kind of guidance even
worse. The Apostle Paul said in Philippians, "Finally,
brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything
is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things."
Following this advice from St. Paul would make some P.G. movies inappropriate. The point is to approach the problem with external
rules is not the answer. Rather through prayer and the study of God's
word, making these decisions internally with a heart for pleasing God
should serve us well in making the right decision.
