2 Cor 7:1-13
BPC  4/24/04  AM Service

This passage addresses our reception of God’s message and his messengers.

Three reasons you should accept God’s messengers:  (1)  A true servant of God has your best interest at heart; (2) A true servant of God speaks the truth even if it hurts; (3) A true servant of God rejoices in your progress.

This passage does not say that ministers never make mistakes, but the point is… a true servant of God should always have your best interest at heart, therefore it behooves you to give them a good hearing!

It is the role of God’s ministers to lead God’s people to Godly sorrow.

Behold what the eyes of the faithful will see!

This passage does not say worship and prayer serve as “silver bullets” to immediately rid us from all the troubles we face; however, at the points and places where we find ourselves confronted with the forces of evil, we can have confidence that if we live by faith and turn to the Lord, we will one day see the types of victory herein described.

Our eyes must be fixed upon the Lord.

God calls his people to watch and witness the works he performs.

It is GOD who must defeat and destroy the enemy.  (though the role of the people is not completely passive)

The resurrection of Jesus Christ brings hope for the future for those who belong to Christ.

Because Jesus has been raised from the dead, we can have absolute assurance when it comes to the resurrection of the redeemed.

Because Jesus has been raised and offered as firstfruits, we have confidence in the full harvest in due time and in our acceptance.

God has an eternal timeline in which all things will happen in their proper time.  The time has not yet come for the resurrection of the bodies who die in Christ, but when that time comes the redeemed will be raised.

There is hope for the future.  All things are not going to always going to be the way they are today.

Christ has risen and received power and authority and will rule until all things, including death, come under his control and are fully defeated.

Promoting the welfare of God’s people requires preserving preserving purity in places where evil creeps in!

Three areas where the church must preserve purity – (1)  Lord’s House & It’s Operations; Lord’s Day and It’s Observance; (3) Lord’s People and His Ordinances

The Expression we do it that way because it’s always been done that way is a dangerous philosophy when one considers the nature of sin.

We must maintain purity when it comes to the Membership, to the Ministers, to the Maintenance of the ministry, and to the management of materials and resources.

Psalm 110

Though believers in the U.S. enjoy immeasurable blessings that many others in other generations or other parts of the world may not know, because of the change in attitude and climate against Christianity we also face difficult challenges that can cause anxiety and restlessness if one does not look to and lean upon the teaching of Scripture.

Because GOD is behind the cause of Jesus Christ, the confidence of Christians should never be lacking.

God’s people should not question, fear, become anxious, impatient or disillusioned; but continue to cling to and hold out the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ!

In this Psalm, the subject of the Psalmist is Jesus Christ.  The Psalmist speaks of his Heavenly Exaltation and Enthronement; his Mighty Rule and Conquest; and his Permanent and Superior Priesthood.

While many are speaking out against Christ; at the same time God works to establish the rule of Christ!

Nehemiah 11

Because leadership is critical to the well being of the new Jerusalem, God’s people must see to it that people serve in their various capacities and callings.

Our view of Life:  Our lives are to centered around God and his kingdom

Our view of Leadership:  It’s critical to the well being of God’s people to have able people serve in positions of leadership.

Our view of Holiness:  Kingdom priorities must become our priorities.

Matt 7:24-29

We must build our lives on Christ’s teaching (obedience to his Word) or our lives will be destroyed by the storms of time.

Outline:  (1) What Jesus was saying about himself; (2) What Jesus was saying about his teachings; (3) What Jesus was saying about his followers

We must guard against just listening (hearing, studying, talking about, etc.) to God’s Word; we must obey it.

The storms of testing will come.

Jesus spoke with Messianic authority.  He claimed the Old Testament passages to be his own.

Jesus’ teachings are not optional, they must be obeyed.  There is full assurance when the text says “Everyone” who hears and obeys is like a wise man, and “Everyone” who  does not obey is like the foolish man… whose house fell.

Kingdom Building requires God’s people to Stand Up and Praise the Name of the Lord our God

If we want to experience the best God has for us, God’s people must stand up and praise the Lord our God

It’s not unusual to find people today who have come to possess salvation but who still feel like “slaves” in a land that was meant for their good and  enjoyment.

God demonstrates through the history of his people that he is gracious and compassionate and provides food and drink for his people.

We as individuals, as a church, and as a nation must stand up and praise the name of the Lord our God.

Luke 17:20-37          Don’t Look Back

Jesus has spoken concerning the kingdom and coming judgment that we should be forewarned and get our spiritual lives in order.

Christ’s kingdom is one of a spiritual nature.

Skeptics often ask Christians when the kingdom of Christ is coming, but the truth is you do not have to wait to experience it.  It’s among us even now, though many miss it when it is right under their nose.

Though the coming of Christ will be preceded by a time of trouble and difficulty; it will come, and when it comes, it well be sudden, unmistakable, and will catch many who are unconcerned … unprepared.

God’s salvation and judgment will be precise, so as to distinguish between those who share their lives together.

We need to consider our affections for the world and ensure the world does not hinder our commitment for Christ.

Nehemiah 7
BPC 2/8/04 AM Service

Church growth does not happen by chance, but begins by laying the groundwork that facilitates the reform that follows.

The work of kingdom building involves: (1) Putting people and policies into place to promote the welfare of God's people; (2) Getting a handle and taking account of those who call themselves Christians; and (3) Contributing to the work of the Lord according to one's abilities.

God's work includes turning over responsibilities and charging those who are qualified to take part in the work.

God not only takes note of the names of those who are numbered among his people; but God also takes note of the level of Commitment to which we are involved in his work.

John 6:35-40
BPC 2/8/04 PM Service

God does not want his people to question, but to be settled in their minds when it comes to whether or not a person is "once saved, always saved."

The eternal security of believers is grounded in the sovereign will of God, which forms the mission and marching orders for Christ, which watches over, guards and protects the believer until the end.

One should not allow the question of whether they are elect or not keep them from coming to Christ, for he will not turn any away that come to him.

2 Cor 8:1-9

Though times and faces may change, many of the issues that churches face are the same today as they were years ago.

Not all men count it gain to give.

It’s a privilege to participate and to share in the service of the Lord and his saints.

It’s better to motivate by example than guilt.

People need to first be committed to the Lord if they are going to give sacrificially to the work of the church and to God’s people.

We will never quit living to self until we first come to live for the Lord.

It’s not enough to give yourself to the reformed faith, to the Presbyterian tradition, to the Brandon Presbyterian Church, you must first give yourselves to the Lord.

There’s no such thing as a person who loves and is committed to the Lord who is not committed to the church.

Nehemiah 3
BPC  1/11/04  PM Service

This chapter is not just a foreman’s sketch pad, but an historical account preserved by the Holy Spirit that provides an example we are to emulate.  This should encourage us in the similar wok we have been called to do (working to promote the welfare of God’s people and building the city of our God)

It’s important that we follow through with our commitments.

God himself is interested and takes careful note of those who participate and those who don’t… along with their attitudes and accomplishments (or lack thereof).

There’s a lot of work to be done.

There’s a lot resting on the work to be done. (the glory of God and the welfare of God’s people).

There’s something for everyone to do.

Church work is not just the work of professionals.

Just as “Every Israelite was to lend a hand towards the building up of Jerusalem”, so should every believer lend a hand toward the work of the church today!
